Al Ain Residency Celebrates International Literacy Day

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Monday, September 16th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

The Al Ain Residency and Foreigners Affairs Department celebrated International Literacy Day in cooperation with the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments. This event is in line with community-based initiatives launched by the department to interact with society regarding issues that concern them and contribute to raising social awareness. Moreover, it embodies the goals of the Ministry of Interior to maintain public confidence. A large number of the department’s staff and customers participated.

The events featured a cultural competition for the department’s staff, as well as distributing leaflets and brochures acquainting the public with the UAE’s role to eradicate illiteracy.

Dr. Ammar Ibrahim Hassan, an Imam with the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, delivered a lecture stressing the importance of knowledge. Dr. Hassan stated that Islam is a religion of knowledge, encouraging the community to seek knowledge; modern science proved scientific miracles in the Qur'an and Sunnah.

For his part, Colonel Khalifa Matar Balquba' Al Humairi, Director of Al Ain Residency and Foreigners Affairs Department, highlighted that this initiative underscores the department's commitment to community events. “The UAE has always celebrated such international days out of its belief in their regional and international importance in mobilizing resources to achieve coveted goals. This event also reflects the desire of the international, regional and local community to take part in such occasions and constitutes an incentive to enroll in literacy programs through the organization of educational events and activities,” pointed out Colonel Al Humairi.

The United Nations noted that the International Literacy Day was celebrated this year, with a specific focus on “Literacies for the 21st Century” to highlight the need to provide “basic literacy skills for all” and the need to provide everyone with more advanced skills in literacy from the perspective of lifelong learning.

The UN also indicated that literacy is a human right, a cornerstone of lifelong learning, and a way to promote welfare and livelihood; therefore, it constitutes a driving force for sustainable and comprehensive development.

The meaning of literacy has evolved over the years, while the traditional concept of literacy that is limited to reading, writing and arithmetic is still widespread in many countries and regions similar to the concept of functional literacy, which links literacy with social and economic development. Various new definitions of literacy or forms of literacy have emerged that describe the diverse learning needs of individuals in knowledge societies dominated by globalization.
