ADP Arrests Charlatan Targeting Women Seeking Happiness

For AED 70,000 per session

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, September 7th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

The Abu Dhabi Police managed to arrest a charlatan trying to dupe people into paying for black magic, particularly women seeking happiness. The charlatan was pretending to possess magical supernatural abilities to solve social, health and psychological problems.

According to Colonel Dr Rashid Mohammed Borshid, Head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), ,indicated that the 57-year old charlatan was caught in an undercover operation, as he illegally offered to fix the problems of an undercover policewoman, pretending to be a client seeking happiness.

Colonel Borshid said: “As soon as we received information confirming his involvement in acts of witchcraft and sorcery, police personnel arrested the charlatan (of African nationality), who works as a washing machine repairman.”

He added that the undercover female police agent sought the help of the charlatan, who pretended to be able to heal her emotional suffering, solve her social problems and grant her the desired happiness, for an amount of AED 70,000 per session. “The charlatan is used to tricking unsuspecting people, particularly gullible women, into parting with large sums of money in return for supernatural cures or solutions,” he explained.

Colonel Borshid indicated that the suspect maintained that there was nothing wrong or illegal in his services; claiming to provide cure for incurable heart diseases. Head of the CID at Abu Dhabi Police also noted: “The gear seized with the suspect are commonly used in black magic and spells, including scraps of paper and cloths containing incantations and symbols; as well as powders, incense, prayer beads, and unknown herbs.”

Colonel Borshid emphasized that the Abu Dhabi Police will show no tolerance towards sorcerers and charlatans, stressing that it will firmly track and address them. This aims to protect society from the risks posed by this category that dupes and blackmails people to make illegal gains.

The Abu Dhabi Police had launched a community-based initiative last May, to raise awareness among UAE nationals and residents about the dangers of charlatans. It called on community members to refrain from seeking the help of sorcerers in dealing with their problems or other matters, to avoid falling prey to false hopes. It also advised them through sermons and lectures, to cooperate by reporting all individuals who perform such practices.
