7,836 Tourist Incidents in 3 Years

A total number of 7,836 tourist incidents and notifications were recorded and handled by the Tourism Police Department at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Abu Dhabi Police GHQ in the past three years, out of which 2,621 in 2012, 2,596 in 2011, and 2,619 in 2010.
Major General Mohammed bin Al Awadhi Al Menhali, Director General of Police Operations noted that Abu Dhabi Police is undertaking significant strategic development efforts to promote tourism police, and improve security services provided to tourists. This philosophy aims at providing tourists with all means of comfort, while maintaining security in society, in a manner that maintains public confidence in the police.
“The Tourism Police Department endeavors to enhance public awareness of its tasks and duties that serve the tourism sector, with a view to make the Emirate of Abu Dhabi a favored touristic destination. The department also seeks to spread a strong sense of security and tranquility in touristic facilities, promote touristic landmarks as part of future plans to invest in Abu Dhabi’s tourism sector’s offerings, and maintain the Emirati cultural and historical national heritage deeply rooted in the ancient times,”  noted Al Menhali.
Al Mennhali noted that the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ’s departments coordinate and cooperate to ensure the safety of the tourism sector in Abu Dhabi. For this end, a Security Committee has been formed to secure touristic events, develop practical plans and joint security cooperation.  He also pointed out that all departments work as one team to prevent and curb all types and forms of crimes.
For his part, Lieutenant Colonel Muzeed Fahd Al Otaibi, Head of the Tourism Police Section at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) stressed that the Tourism Police Department handles the various tourism-related issues, as per a standard operating system. It also operates according to two inseparable methodologies, to raise awareness and enhance security  in terms of crime fighting and prevention.
“The Tourism Police Officers are deployed at four sites, according to specific action plans and joint cooperation with the competent authorities, as follows: the Abu Dhabi Corniche, Al Bateen Beach, Yas Waterworld in Yas Island, and Mina Zayed (cruise shipping activities). They are always present to secure the various events and touristic activities in Abu Dhabi,” added Lieutenant Colonel Al Otaibi.
He also indicated that the Tourism Police Department has well-trained and qualified staff members who underwent specialized training courses in tourism security, to deal professionally with tourists. Furthermore, the department employs human cadre who speak several languages, including (English, French, Chinese, Filipino, Urdu, Farsi and other languages), to provide advice and guidance to visitors and answer their inquiries while visiting the Emirate.
Moreover, Lieutenant Colonel Al Otaibi highlighted the tourism awareness- raising procedures by communicating with all tourism-related authorities in the emirate, as well as with embassies and consulates. The department also interacts directly with tourists by distributing leaflets and behavioral guideline brochures to acquaint tourists with the laws, customs and traditions prevailing in the State. The awareness-raising efforts also include organizing awareness campaigns in Abu Dhabi ports, and during exhibitions and events, as well as documenting and updating the awareness brochures posted on the Tourism Police Department's Website (www.hr.adpolice.gov.ae/tourismpolice).
“In terms of security procedures, tourist patrols are deployed at the various touristic events, to foster  a societal  relationship with the public in general, particularly tourists.  Tourism Police officers also receive complaints and closely monitor any indecent behavior and breaches to public morals and ethics,such as disturbances,  intrusions or offences, with a view to enhance public protection in touristic sites,” explained Al Otaibi.
Complaints and Proposals Handled by the Tourism Police Website
Lieutenant Colonel Muzeed Al Otaibi shed light on the distinguished features of the the Abu Dhabi Police’ Tourism Police Department’s website (www.hr.adpolice.gov.ae/tourismpolice). He noted that the website features a complaints and proposals portal directly seen and handled by the department.  “The website receives several proposals that are reviewed by the department and studied to as potential ideas to be included in the Tourism Police’s future plans,” added Al Otaibi. Concluding, he called on all segments of society to cooperate with the Tourism Police Department by reporting any negative phenomenon or behavior, by calling the Abu Dhabi Police’s “Aman” service on the toll free number 8002626.
