Tailgating is a growing concern, but overall UAE driving perceptions improve – UAE Road Safety Monitor

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, September 6th 2016 [ME NewsWire]

RoadSafetyUAE and QIC Insured present the findings of the 3rd cycle of the ‘UAE Road Safety Monitor’, a unique perception study of UAE driving behaviour.
    Tailgating is on the rise.
Positive perception trends of improved infrastructure, commute time and driving enjoyment.
Perception of improved behaviour linked to dangerous driving, speeding, lane swerving and distracted driving.

The good news outweighs the bad news in the most recent update of the UAE Road Safety Monitor survey: Only tailgating is on the rise, contrasting positive perception trends linked to main killers on UAE’s roads, as well as to infrastructure improvement, driving enjoyment and commute time.

The 3rd cycle of the study was commissioned by QIC Insured (Qatar Insurance Company) and RoadSafetyUAE. It measures perception trends of UAE motorists for the last 6 respective months. This most recent cycle was conducted by YouGov in August 2016, and it is based on the views of a representative sample of more than 1,000 UAE residents.

“With the results of meanwhile 3 cycles of the UAE Road Safety Monitor (1HY 2015, 1HY 2016, 2HY 2016), we are now in the position to start identifying trends of the perceived behaviour of UAE motorists, and not only snap shots”, comments Thomas Edelmann, RoadSafetyUAE’s founder & managing director. “It is very important to track these trends, as they shall help all involved stakeholders in the public and private segments as one feedback tool for their various education, enforcement and infrastructure initiatives.”

Frederik Bisbjerg, Executive Vice President MENA Retail, QIC Insured, states: “It is indeed encouraging to see, that most of the dimensions develop in the right direction, which can be attributed to the many road safety initiatives in the UAE.  We are proud to be associated with this unique long term perception study, as it demonstrates the efforts of QIC Insured to actively support the creation of safer roads, in line with the ‘UAE Vision 2021.”

The highlights of this 3rd cycle:

A stable big majority (78%) state, that the road traffic infrastructure has improved vs. 6 months ago, leading to shorter commute times (63%) and higher driving enjoyment (53%).

The perception of dangerous driving is stable, with 55% of respondents stating the same.

The trends for distracted driving (75%), abrupt changing of lanes (66%) and speeding (65%), too have declined.

The only increasing trend we see is for tailgating: 69% of respondents observe more tailgating motorists within the last 6 months.

While the observed trends are mainly positive, the absolute % numbers are high, and further efforts in education, enforcement and infrastructure improvement are needed by all concerned stakeholders, public and private entities and the media.
