ADP Seize Counterfeit Sportswear Goods

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, September 21st 2013 [ME NewsWire]

Abu Dhabi Police managed to seize a large quantity of counterfeit sportswear and shoes that amount to 100 kilograms, as has been proved by the Forensic Laboratory. The products bear the logos of internationally known brands.

Three traders of Asian nationality, including one Residence Law violator, from three stores in Abu Dhabi have been arrested for selling the counterfeit goods, after a raid carried out by the Department of Criminal Investigations (CID).

Colonel Dr. Rashid Mohammad Borshid, Head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said: "We have received a complaint in this regard. After validating the claims and proving commercial fraud, we accordingly took legal action to raid the suspected stores and warehouses and seize the counterfeit goods.”

The seized sportswear items, which amount to 100 kilograms, include tracksuits, T-shirts, short and long sports pants, as well as sports shoes and hats, all of them bearing the logos of well-known brands. "The products were confiscated, and forensic laboratory tests have shown that they are counterfeit and packed with the logos of the original product,” he continued.

Colonel Borshid added that the arrested admitted being involved in commercial fraud and selling the counterfeit sportswear bearing the logos of well-known brands for more gains.

Moreover, Colonel Borshid emphasized the keenness of Abu Dhabi Police, in coordination with the competent authorities to track down and combat all negative practices, which could affect the business sector’s performance and are in violation of the laws and regulations of business activities. This philosophy embodies the Abu Dhabi Government’s directives to create a competitive fair and legitimate business environment throughout the emirate, and to prevent commercial fraud and violation of people’s rights.

“The aim of the police step is to take quick action to protect consumers against financial losses due to paying large amounts of money for fake goods. Protecting the rights of the original companies, and curtailing the issue of commercial fraud is also among the Abu Dhabi Police objectives," added Borshid.

Head of CID indicated that community members need to communicate with competent authorities to know their rights as consumers, and receive awareness-raising brochures, so as to take part effectively in curbing commercial fraud. He has also urged community members to report any suspected goods and violations of law in all areas, and advised buyers to buy such items from authorized agents and distributors to ensure not getting counterfeit products, and preserve their rights as consumers.
