ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, August 7th 2013 [ME NewsWire]
With Eid drawing near, the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate called on families and parents to increase efforts to provide traffic safety during the Eid Al Fitr holidays. The directorate also urged community members to adhere to traffic laws and legal speeds, and warned them against talking on the phone or reading text messages while driving.
For his part, Brigadier Engineer Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police indicated that a comprehensive plan was set up to intensify traffic patrols during Eid Al Fitr holidays on intersections, parks, external highways, and near slaughterhouses. These measures aim to ensure a smooth traffic flow and provide advice to motorists and all road users, via the Abu Dhabi Police traffic program to reduce traffic accidents on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
Al Harithi added: “As part of the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ’s campaign, held under the slogan ‘Your Safety’, any reckless or uncivilized behavior on the roads using vehicles or motorcycles, will be severely punished; as well as car races organized by young people.” He stressed the need to abide by traffic laws; and to follow the instructions of traffic patrol members deployed on internal and external roads. He also urged motorists to drive carefully; reduce speeds, and to give priority to pedestrians near crosswalks.
Moreover, he called on families to be vigilant and to keep a watchful eye on their children by preventing them from playing in the streets, parks, and public gardens without supervision. He also warned them against neglecting their children, or leaving them in the care of nannies or maids, which increases the risks of run-over accidents involving children.
In addition, Al Harithi stressed that road safety is a mutual responsibility between all institutions and sectors of society. He also called on motorists on internal and external roads to abide by traffic laws and speed limits; fasten seat belts; avoid answering phones while driving; leave a sufficient safe distance between vehicles; be cautious, reduce speeds near traffic lights; and avoid putting children less than 10 years of age in the front seat of the vehicle to avoid any mishaps.
