Building on the success of the Second Annual UAE Epilepsy Congress, the Third Annual UAE Epilepsy Congress will take place from April 4th to April 5th. The congress is hosted under the umbrella of the Emirati League Against Epilepsy (ELAE), and endorsed by the Commission of Eastern Mediterranean Affairs (CEMA) and the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE). Furthermore, this year will proudly host The First Joint Emirati Saudi Congress. This initiative is taken to enhance collaboration among the two chapters and it is expected to draw more attendees in the region.

The ELAE is a professional organization of the ILAE for health care providers, scientists and technologists involved in the diagnosis, treatment and research in the field of epilepsy in the United Arab Emirates. The ELAE ensures implementation of standards of epilepsy care and education in UAE as well as promoting the exchange of medical and scientific information related to epilepsy.

The congress has been put forth in efforts to provide education to healthcare professionals to enhance the overall healthcare standards in the fight against Epilepsy of the region. The scientific committee has worked hard to put together a solid program with participation of renowned international and regional faculty, whom during the two days will present cutting edge topics in clinical epileptology. This year’s key note speaker at the congress is Professor Emilio Perruca, the President of ILAE.

“Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which a person has repeated seizures over time through episodes of disturbed brain activity that are due to abnormal electrical discharges on the brain’s nerve cells. Epileptic brain activity causes changes in attention or behavior while symptoms vary from person to person,” said Dr. Taoufik Alsaadi, President of the UAE chapter of the ILAE, and the Chief the Neurology Department at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) in Abu Dhabi. While the prevalence figures are not entirely known in the region, matching global statistical figures, local epilepsy doctors believe that up to 3% of the general population suffers from epilepsy- more than 120,000.

The Third Annual UAE Epilepsy Congress will take place at Dubai and is expected to attract more than three hundred healthcare professionals. “Our Second Annual congress has caught the attention of hundreds of healthcare professionals interested in the field of epilepsy and physicians in the neuroscience field. We trust that the latest advancements of research in the field and a broad range of challenging topics facing health care providers will be addressed at this year’s congress and will provide the highest standards in education that aim at tackling epilepsy in all aspects,” concluded Dr. Alsaadi.
