MoI Asserts the Importance of Protecting Children and Ensuring Their Safety

The Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center reiterated the importance of the topics that are being discussed at the Second Crime Prevention Conference, which is being held under the slogan “The Family…Prevention and Protection.” Many experts are presenting papers at the conference to increase social efforts that aim to protect families and children against all risks.

Lieutenant Colonel Faisal Mohammed Al Shammari, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center, explained that among the various topics that were discussed was the issue of protecting children and increase their safety and security, in addition to ensuring healthy child-rearing practices based on scientific methods. He also stressed the importance of such scientific events and conferences and their effect on enriching scientific research and institutional efforts, enhancing social awareness and encouraging transparency to discuss child-related issues. These efforts fall within the Ministry of Interior’s framework and its view of society members as important partners in crime prevention.

Lieutenant Colonel Al Shammari also said that the Ministry of Interior has been keen on participating in preparing a comprehensive plan that protects children. Based on the best advanced international standards, the Ministry of Interior made sure that the draft represents the police leadership’s vision. This vision aims to present the UAE as a civilized hub and a role model in improving children’s safety and security, depending on the best procedures that will improve security and safety in society.

Lieutenant Colonel Al Shammari noted that the “Hemayati” application that the Ministry of Interior recently launched is a tool to ensure children’s safety and provides them with the necessary protection. The application enables parents to keep track of their children’s whereabouts and specify the times of their arrival and departure from school, or when they are late. It also allows parents to communicate with their children all day, in addition to providing a built-in SOS feature, enabling children to send distress calls to their parents when they feel threatened. Lieutenant Colonel Al Shammari said that the application could be downloaded for free on smartphones. The application is only available in the UAE, and can only be activated the parents in order to locate their children’s whereabouts should they go missing. The application is one the Ministry of Interior’s recently launched e-services, which include 169 e-services and 30 smartphone services.

Furthermore, Lieutenant Colonel Al Shammari stressed the fact that the youth and children represent the majority of society. Therefore, it is necessary to work on providing the highest safety and security standards for them. It is also important to invest in children’s leisure times and keep them occupied with useful activities, and support the government’s efforts in constructing safe recreational facilities for children, such as gardens and parks.

In conclusion, Lieutenant Colonel Al Shammari reassured the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center’s commitment to strengthening its cooperation with civil society institutions and media entities in the UAE, to  promote the crime prevention culture to protect children against potential crimes and to help strengthen society by applying the best international practices, with a view to promoting children’s safety in the UAE and worldwide. The Ministry of Interior is also committed to providing the best services to society, and enhancing  efforts that aim to develop police and social work, implement the best international practices, and participate in drafting legislations and regulations that are suitable for protecting families and children, as they are the pillars of the future and the cornerstones of nations.
