The Security Media Department has carried out a total of 99,460 tasks during 2013, tasks that embody the Ministry of Interior’s message to deal with transparency with community members via various media, and to acquaint them with the ministry’s services and achievements, as partners in the effort to maintain security and stability.
The Security Media Department communicates with the various society segments in three languages (English, Arabic and Urdu). It seeks to gain the confidence of members of the public, newspapers readers; social networking sites users and followers of other media, by interacting with them in a way that meets their needs and preferences.
Lieutenant Colonel Saeed Hussein Al Khajah, Deputy Director of Tactical Affairs and Security Media Department, at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Interior, highlighted the various activities achieved in terms of media material, TV and radio releases, publications, Internet, advertising, photography, translation, documentation, in addition to media archiving and documentation, the security media patrols, and campaigns.
The department also provides media outlets with three different media material (text, audio and video/photo), of the Ministry of Interior’s activities, services and various initiatives, especially those of interest to the public.
Lieutenant Colonel Al Khajah said that the Security Media Department is the arm of government communication for the Ministry of Interior and Abu Dhabi Police. “It is entrusted with the task of delivering the ministry’s media discourse as quickly and objectively as possible, so as to acquaint them with the elements necessary to enhance the sense of security and public safety. It also strives to promote positive behavior and patriotic spirit, with a view to activate efficient community partnership, among other objectives,” explained Lieutenant Colonel Al Khajah.
International Awards
Lieutenant Colonel Al Khajah highlighted the Security Media Department’s significant role, which earned the Ministry of Interior the Distinguished Government Entity Award in the field of Government communication, within the UAE Government Excellence Award in its first and second editions. “The Security Media Department also received three international awards in the Summit Marketing Effectiveness Awards competition, granted by the Summit International Awards. The department ranked first for its F999 sports car project; the project won the Platinum Award for the ‘Corporate Reputation’ category; it came second receiving the Silver Award in the ‘Non-Profit Entities’ category, while the Falcon Motorcycle received the Silver Award of Effective Marketing in the category ‘Corporate reputation’,” indicated Lieutenant Colonel Al Khajah.
Work Mechanism
Deputy Director of Tactical Affairs and Security Media Department explained the work mechanism at the Media Security Department. “Work is carried out by the department’s different sections and branches. The Press Branch sends press material related to the services and activities of the Ministry of Interior and the Abu Dhabi Police to the media. It also answers inquiries and questions from the media, and prepares press materials for media and awareness campaigns, as per a defined program that regulates topics and publishing schedule in media outlets,” said Lieutenant Colonel Al Khajah.
Lieutenant Colonel Al Khajah added that the TV Branch handles coordination with TV channels across the country, with respect to broadcasting news reports that serve the strategy of the Ministry of Interior and the Abu Dhabi Police, promote security awareness among the public, and provide TV coverage of the campaigns, organized or sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Police.
The TV Branch also produces TV commercials related to awareness campaigns, as well as documentaries and reports that support the police institution’s image and highlight its achievements. Moreover, it supervises TV productions to ensure its quality, and prepares for the Abu Dhabi Police participation in live programs.
Furthermore, the TV Branch documents TV-related productions and participations, and works to improve approaches used to highlight the role of the Ministry of Interior and the Abu Dhabi Police. It activates communication channels, strengthens cooperation relations with TV channels, and posts TV material on the website: www.adpolice.tv.
The Radio Branch is in charge of coordination with radio stations to broadcast news that contribute to enhance security awareness among community members. It also uses live programs to provide extensive coverage of the various events. Moreover, it produces and broadcasts awareness advertisements and shows, handles voice-overs, supervises radio production processes to ensure their quality, communicates with live programs, and provides answers to complaints and suggestions.
Moreover, the Radio Branch prepares daily radio traffic messages and updates about traffic in Abu Dhabi via various radio stations across the UAE. It constantly strives to develop methods of radio communication with the public, activate communication channels, boost cooperation ties with radio stations, and prepare and deliver the weekly police news bulletin.
“The Radio Studio is equipped with the latest technology for radio broadcasting, and operated by national cadres, efficiently qualified for this task, and trained according to various forms of elocution,” added Lieutenant Colonel Al Khajah.
The Studies and Media Campaigns Section prepares and analyzes media studies and researches results that contribute to improve media security. It also assesses the results of implemented campaigns, carries out studies and researches on media-related developments, oversees the publications issued by the Ministry of Interior and the Abu Dhabi Police, and supervises publication of advertisements in newspapers and magazines.
The section also implements the media, marketing, awareness, traffic, community-based and security campaigns; it supervises and updates data, publishes media material on websites and pages of the Ministry of Interior and the Abu Dhabi Police on the various social networking sites, develops and designs new websites and portals on those sites.
Lieutenant Colonel Al Khajah indicated that the Media Documentation Section includes the following branches: archive, coordination, follow-up and statistics: “It handles the archiving of video, audio and text material through a modern electronic system. It also provides material that date back to the historical phases of the police institution’s establishment in the UAE.”
The Strategy
Adding further, Lieutenant Colonel Al Khajah noted that the Security Media Department’s strategy focuses on gaining the confidence of members of the public, newspapers readers and followers of other media. “It adopts transparency as an approach in dealing with the media. It endeavors to raise the level of awareness among the public with respect to the Ministry of Interior’s services, using all available communication channels to reach the targeted audience. The department also ensures rapid and effective services to the media and decision-makers, and endeavors to maintain public confidence in the UAE, as a community blessed with safety and security, by publishing the Ministry of Interior’s key messages periodically,” pointed out Lieutenant Colonel Al Khajah.
The strategy calls for enhancing the quality of human resources and optimizing their use. It also calls for qualifying distinguished spokespersons, to efficiently deal with the media. It encourages the use of cutting-edge technologies to support the goals and priorities of the police institution, build partnerships, and communicate with the relevant federal authorities, and with local, national and international media. Furthermore, it encourages proposals to ensure constant and efficient improvement of services and processes, and effective communication with the public.
The Security Media Department’s plan includes several phases, based on statistics and performance indicators, assessment of the police institution’s current situation, carrying out benchmarking comparisons with other media and government communication agencies, including comparisons between communication methods and quality.
Supporting Decision-Makers
Lieutenant Colonel Al Khaja also highlighted the tasks and duties of the Government Communication and Media Support Section. He said: “This section uses communication channels to reach the various segments of the targeted audience, and acquaint them with different issues related to the Ministry of Interior and the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ. It focuses on building a more interactive and positive relationship with the media, to enhance the credibility of the Ministry of Interior and allow staff members working in the field of government communication to provide better services to information seekers, whether government agencies, media, strategic partners or members of the public.”
The section also strives to strengthen government communication in support of decision-making and policy formulation as well as ensuring the success of the initiatives. Government communication’s tasks include promoting creativity in the use of media communication channels, employing new channels of communication, communicating directly with strategic partners, and enhancing the credibility and impact of media initiatives launched by the Abu Dhabi Police and the Ministry of Interior.
It also reinforces communication concepts within the institution, as well as the skills and capabilities of government communication personnel. It allows formation of a database that includes government communication teams across the various police leaderships in the ministry. The TV crews and photographers provide coverage for special police-related activities and events, and work on developing film and TV technology systems.
Events’ Coverage
The Security Media Patrols coordinate with the Operations Room to film video material and take photographs of certain events. The patrols also provide technical support to the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ’s spokesperson during major incidents and crimes. Moreover, they organize the filming process at the scene of major and serious incidents, support media coverage of police and security events, to provide a more comprehensive video and photo material, in addition to the Monitoring Branch duties.
