Sharp Middle East FZE Supports Children’s Vaccination in South Sudan Camps

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, November 29th 2012 [ME NewsWire]

Sharp Middle East FZE (SMEF), the regional headquarter of MENA, Africa and CIS countries, of global technology giant Sharp, supports Médecins Sans Frontières’(MSF’s) operations in the refugee camps of South Sudan. Under the “Protect Children from Illness” initiative, Sharp Middle East FZE is supporting MSF’s vaccination campaigns aimed at inoculation and epidemic response for children aged 5 years and below. Means of this support were presentedby Mr. Fumio Yamaguchi, CEO ofSharp Middle East and Africa to Mrs. Hala Mouneimne, Deputy Executive Director for MSF’s UAE Regional Office. The support is in the form of a donation of around US$59,000 - the approximate cost of vaccines to protect more than 38,000 children against measles.

The donation was collected from “My Sharp Our Future” Social Action Campaign applied in Middle East, Africa and CIS in support of health programs in the stated areas. From the proceeds of the total units sold of AQUOS TVs and PCI generators and air purifiers in 100 days leading to Sharp’s 100th Anniversary, the donations weregranted to support activities that protect lives and health of children. The campaign was initiated in ASEAN and Oceania region by Sharp Corp. incelebration of Sharp’s 100th anniversary, with a forecasted donation of US$ 250,000 for ASEAN, Oceania and Middle East regions combined.

Mr. Fumio Yamaguchi, CEO of Sharp MEA commented, “We are pleased to assist MSF in their life-saving services to the catastrophe in South Sudanese Refugee Camps with this humble donation. It is a way of demonstrating our sincere effort in making a better world for our children in need.”

“We are thankful for Sharp Middle East FZE’s generous support and response to this emergency”, said Mrs. Hala Mouneimne, Deputy Executive Director for MSF’s UAE Regional Office. “As the main medical aid provider in all refugee camps in Upper Nile and Unity states, our teams have witnessed a decrease in the catastrophic mortality rates that had ravaged the camps during the summer, due to a massive surge in MSF’s response. However, the situation remains critical with refugees still 100% dependent on humanitarian aid. As MSF’s response to this crisis continues, outside the scope of the media, Sharp’s support means that we are able to continue our life saving medical services.”

Diseases such as measles, meningitis, yellow fever and cholera continue to claim thousands of lives in many parts of the world. This first collaboration between Sharp Middle East FZE and MSF will contribute to ensuring that children, who are the first victims, can be protected through inoculations before epidemic outbreaks push them to the brink.
