New York, United States / Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Monday, May 14th 2012 [ME NewsWire]

His Excellency Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman, DP World, has been inducted into the highly prestigious International Maritime Hall of Fame in the US in recognition of his visionary contributions to the maritime industry.

The Board of the Maritime Association of the Port of New York/New Jersey, which instituted the Hall of Fame in 1994, recently conferred the honour on Mr Bin Sulayem at a gala ceremony marking the 19th annual International Maritime Hall of Fame Awards in New York in the presence of hundreds of top level industry representatives.

The International Maritime Hall of Fame Award is conferred on visionaries of the 21st Century who through excellence in their company, organisation and services exemplify the qualities of futuristic thinking in the maritime industry.

In accepting the award, Mr Bin Sulayem said:

“I view this award as recognition of the contribution of Dubai and the UAE to the maritime world and, through the maritime world, to global trade.

“In many ways, Dubai and the UAE are a microcosm of a much wider picture that shows what visionary leadership, hard work, and a belief in the benefits that trade – and the relationships forged through trade links – can bring.

He added: “This award celebrates Dubai’s rich maritime tradition and its ability to convert opportunity into economic development.”

Mr Bin Sulayem highlighted that DP World is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Port Rashid along with that of the UAE and attributed the achievements recognised by the award to “the teamwork, commitment and professional excellence of all my colleagues at DP World and the other Dubai companies that have formed the bedrock of our nation. I also thank our customers for their consistent support across our global portfolio.”

Mr Bin Sulayem’s fellow inductees were Matthew K. Rose, Chairman & CEO, BNSF Railway Company; Captain Wei Jiafu, Chairman, COSCO Group; Joseph C. Curto, President, New York Shipping Association, Inc. NYSA; and Spyros Polemis, Chairman & Managing Director, Seacrest Shipping Co., Ltd.
