ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, July 27th 2013 [ME NewsWire]
The
Medical Services Department at Abu Dhabi Police announced that its new
laser eye surgery unit “LASIK” has began providing medical services and
therapy for the Ministry of Interior’ staff members. The Department
also indicated that a number of individuals have undergone medical
examinations in preparation for conducting a vision correction surgery.
Major
General Khalil Dawood Badran, Director General of Finance and Services
stated that providing the “LASIK” service represents an achievement
towards enhancing the quality of the services provided by the Medical
Services Department. This comes in line with the vision of Lt. General
HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister
of Interior to offer the best medical services and treatment for the
Ministry’s staff members and their families.
He attributed the
development of such services to the support provided by the police
leadership by introducing state-of-the-art technologies used in therapy
and hiring medical skills; as well as to the employees’ efforts which
have contributed to maintain the leadership of the Medical Services
Department in both the medical and therapeutic fields.
“The
Ministry of Interior dedicates great attention to provide the best
services as per the international quality criteria and standards in
treating patients. This contributes to the success of the services
development and integration system at the Medical Services Department,
to treat patients, provide medicines, and expand health education among
police staff members and community members”, added Major General Badran.
On
the same note, Colonel Jassem Al Tunaiji, Head of the Medical Services
Department, noted that the “LASIK” Unit is equipped with modern devices,
to improve the quality of medical services provided by the Department.
This embodies the Police Leadership’s vision aimed at developing medical
and therapeutic services for police staff members and their families.
The unit also offers advice and spreads medical culture on various
topics between community members, in line with the State strategy on
health care.
Colonel Al Tunaiji also tackled the leading role of
the Medical Services Department in providing treatment to patients;
introducing the most advanced tools and instruments to diagnose of
cases; and prescribing the proper treatment. He also pointed out the
Department’s keenness to provide the best services that enhance the
quality of patients’ treatment.
For their part, Ophthalmology
consultants Dr. Flex and Dr. Bilas Mombin emphasized the absence of any
post-surgery complications involving the “LASIK” vision correction
surgery. They also reassured patients wishing to undergo such operation
and explained accurately the various stages that patients must go
through before going into surgery.
Dr. Flex, Ophthalmology
Consultant, explained that all surgeries that will be carried out in the
“LASIK” Unit at the Medical Services Department in Abu Dhabi Police,
ADP will use the newly developed high quality Excimer laser device, for
people who are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism and want to
get rid of the eyeglasses or contact lens. “The Excimer Laser devices
uses shortwave ultraviolet rays to modify the cornea’s refractive
power”, added Dr. Flex.
He added that during the LASIK surgery,
the laser is used to cut a thin flap of corneal tissue, using a
computer, consistent with the refractive defects determined through
careful examination prior to surgery. Furthermore, he stressed that that
the success rate of this surgery is around 100%, with a response rate
that varies from one person to another, due to the differences in the
corneal tissue layer.
“A full medical examination of the
patient's eye is conducted to identify the corneal thickness and shape
to determine the suitability of the case. Thereafter the patient is
acquainted with the different stages of the surgery, and then dilation
of the pupil is induced using a specific eye drop,” indicated Dr. Flex.
He
also mentioned that the surgery is usually performed under local
anesthesia so the patient won’t feel any pain. Furthermore, he affirmed
the absence of any post operation complications; pointing out that
during the first week following the surgery, patients are given a course
of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops, and need to avoid
swimming. They also will not be allowed to drive at night for 4 to 5
days.
Commenting on the same subject, Dr. Bilas Mombin explained
that before the surgery, patients are examined using four devices in
order to check the cornea’s suitability. “The complications associated
with such surgeries are rare, whereas the success percentage for patient
suffering from simple myopia or nearsightedness, reaches 98%, and in
cases of -6 myopia, success rate is 95%.
