Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, February 25th 2014 [ME NewsWire]
The first meeting for the GCC and Jordan Search and Rescue Teams Development Committee kicked off on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi, and is being chaired by the UAE.
The meeting was inaugurated by Major General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, Director General of Central Operations at Abu Dhabi Police GHQ. Major General Al Raisi highlighted the outstanding achievement made by the Emirates Search and Rescue Team (UAESRT) by winning the international classification as a Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Team, thanks to the guidance and support of the police leadership.
Al Raisi stressed the UAE’s keenness to provide its expertise in the field of search and rescue to their fellow sister states. He also expressed the need to find better methods of cooperation between search and rescue teams in this region, and leverage modern technology in this regard.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Brigadier General Ismail Al Serkal, Deputy Director General of Central Operations at Abu Dhabi Police; Colonel Anwar Al Mulla, Head of the ICT Department of Abu Dhabi Police; and a number of other officers.
Al Raisi welcomed the participating delegations to their second home, the UAE. Furthermore, he stressed the commitment of the higher leadership to supporting the committee in order for it to achieve its goals, noting the importance of the exchange of experiences between the committee’s member states, so as to reach the highest international standards.
On this occasion, Lt. Colonel Mohammed Abdul Jalil Al Ansari, Head of the UAE Search and Rescue Team and chairman of the meeting, delivered a speech. “The member states have decided to establish the committee during the meeting of International Search and Rescue (SAR) team leaders, held in the Netherlands, under the patronage of the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG). The UAE was elected unanimously by acclamation to chair the committee, in recognition of its role in this area,” explained Lt. Colonel Al Ansari.
Lt. Colonel Al Ansari said that the committee will lay the foundations for developing search and rescue teams in accordance with the international system. “It will prepare a short-term 3year strategy, develop the necessary training for the search and rescue teams as per the requirements of the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG), coordinate joint exercises, as well as international and regional response plans,” noted Lt. Colonel Al Ansari.
On the sidelines of the three-day meeting, a workshop will be held to discuss the strategic plan. The attendees will also discuss joint training courses and exercises, and discuss response plans and the timetable for the committees’ work schedule for the next two years. They will also review the important activities taking place this year, and a number of other topics on the agenda.
