MOI Launches its Third “Summer without Accidents” Campaign

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, July 6th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

The Traffic Coordination Department at the Ministry of Interior launched the third traffic awareness campaign for 2013, as part of the traffic sector initiatives to improve road safety. The campaign, which will run until September 1st, is organized under the slogan “A Summer without Accidents", and aims to promote community solidarity and joint action to reduce traffic accidents.

Brigadier Gaith Hassan Al Zaabi, Director General of Traffic Coordination Department at the Ministry of Interior, indicated that the various Traffic and Patrols Departments at the state level are taking part in the campaign, along with more than 20 agencies concerned with traffic safety in the public and private sectors. Its key objective is to educate motorists on the need to take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their vehicles; perform regular maintenance and check the validity of the vehicles’ tires, to maintain their own safety.

Al Zaabi explained that the campaign comes in line with the Ministry of Interior’s strategy, as part of the Federal Government’s strategy; under the Supreme Leadership’s directives to achieve the highest levels of traffic safety for all road users. It is also in keeping with the traffic sector initiatives to raise awareness among the various segments of society on the risks associated with traffic accidents and their resulting deaths and injuries, as well as the material and moral damages.

Brigadier Al Zaabi emphasized the keenness to bolster cooperation with the various competent authorities to raise awareness among the various segments of society to reduce traffic accidents. Moreover, he pointed out that traffic accidents remain a significant source of concern for security bodies in the country, in spite of the diligent efforts exerted to reduce such accidents because of their adverse effects represented by the number of deaths and injuries and other social impacts, as well as the material losses to property, which cost the country huge amounts of money

“The ‘summer without accidents’ campaign coincides with the beginning of the summer vacation, which witnesses an increased rate of land trips; this requires taking extra precautions related to vehicle safety, including tire safety and conducting regular maintenance; complying with cargo height restrictions which should not exceed 60cm, because the overload may lead to an imbalance, thus losing control over the vehicle,” added Al Zaabi.

He underscored the need to create awareness and instill the traffic culture among all motorists and road users, in the importance of abiding by the vehicles safety rules; to ensure their safety and the safety of others.

“According to the statistics issued by the Traffic Coordination Department, a total of 1454 traffic accidents occurred between June 1st and September 1st in 2012, leading to 114 deaths and 1340 injuries. Accidents that occurred as a result of tire explosion amounted to 22 accidents, including 9 collisions and 13 rollover accidents, which caused 8 deaths and 56 various injuries during the same period of last year”, he continued.

Concluding, Brigadier General Al Zaabi noted that the campaign targets the largest segment of society through the various media, (print and broadcast), the internet, and billboards. It also includes radio talk shows hosting a number of traffic officials and experts, to answer any inquiries from the public regarding the campaign, its values and traffic culture.
