ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, July 7th 2013 [ME NewsWire]
Major General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, Director General of Central Operations, launched the first edition of the Federal Security Geospatial Portal, the first-of-its-kind in the region in terms of its institutional characteristics and its comprehensiveness of implementation. The portal includes tens of police and digital maps that are designed and developed internally through idea exchange and efforts made by international experts in the fields of geographic information systems. The portal’s aim is to serve over 18 security and police entities, and police stations at the UAE level.
The project’s implementation is in line with the Ministry of Interior’s vision to enable security and police departments in the UAE by utilizing the latest geographic and scientific methods and technologies. It provides those departments with required geospatial knowledge and information to help them accomplish their goals and to be the best police and security establishment in the world. It also enables them to convey accurate information to the largest segment of clients who work on the ground and in police offices.
The achievement is a result of the continuous work of the Security Geographic Information Systems Center. The aim is to develop the ideal geographic environment that can form the institutional framework for services and geographic applications at the UAE level. The portal includes designing and building a unified standard geospatial database, which is considered to be one of the largest geospatial databases made for police purposes and security institutions worldwide. The database contains hundreds of layers of specialized security geographic data and is integrated with other databases used by the ministry.
Major General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi stressed that the launch of the security geospatial portal promotes the effectiveness of the police and the security ecosystem that is currently in use at the Ministry of Interior. He further noted that the portal constitutes a new addition through the interactive tools it provides along with the e-maps and data related to police and security work. He said that the work is accomplished by using other geospatial and security systems in order to build a comprehensive security strategy that is in line with the strategy of the Abu Dhabi and the UAE governments.
Major Muhammed Saleh Al Mansouri, Director of Security Geographic Information Systems Center at the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, explained: “While implementing the project, extra attention was paid to connectivity and direct linking with our strategic partners at the geospatial data society in Abu Dhabi, other federal and local departments related to geospatial systems, and the other emirates in the UAE. We focused on using globally-adopted standards such as OGC, ISO 19113, ISO 27001, and international best practices. The aim of this focus is to ensure the continuity of geospatial services in police entities, provide accurate and high-quality geospatial data, develop innovative solutions to support police tasks, and facilitate the planning and decision making process.” He added: “The strategic goal behind these efforts is to become the best security geospatial system in one of the most effective police establishments, and we hope to make this portal a successful beginning for more geospatial services in the near future.”
He continued: “The portal has been developed using latest geographic technologies and the latest versions of software and global spatial technologies. International best practices were also applied to achieve integration between geographic information systems and policing systems.”
Al Mansouri explained: “These services, which are directed to officers and police members and security departments, constitute the first phase of the geospatial services and applications that the center is developing in line with the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters’ vision. This vision focuses on developing capabilities and capacities of human resources and equips them with the required advanced knowledge and technologies to enable them implement their tasks with efficiency and professionalism. This aims to preserve the security and safety of society, promote readiness to respond to emergencies, and establish strategic plans to face crisis and disasters.”
The portal is one of several services of the Security Geographic Information Systems Center and relies on the federal security geographic infrastructure, which was launched in early 2013. This infrastructure was awarded several international awards such as the Best Geographic Security Infrastructure in the region ensuring work continuity through a central database for geographic systems and information, and a supplementary data center for disaster recovery.
