(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Westinghouse Electric Company is pleased to learn of Georgia Power's recommendation to the Georgia Public Service Commission to support completion of the two Westinghouse AP1000® nuclear power plant units currently under construction at Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro, Georgia, USA.

“We are very pleased with Georgia Power’s decision to recommend the continued construction of Vogtle 3 & 4, and are honored to have the opportunity to move forward with our Vogtle customers,” said José E. Gutiérrez, president and chief executive officer of Westinghouse. “These units will continue to provide employment for thousands of workers as we help to bring safe, clean, affordable nuclear energy to the citizens of Georgia. Georgia Power’s continued confidence in the AP1000 plant technology strengthens their energy offerings and nuclear energy’s role in America’s infrastructure.”

The many benefits of the AP1000 plant, arguably the industry’s leading Gen III+ nuclear power plant, includes passive safety design features and the use of modular construction techniques. The plant’s design has a strong licensing pedigree, with approval by nuclear regulatory authorities in the United States, the United Kingdom and China. Work is nearing successful completion on the world’s first four AP1000 units at the Sanmen and Haiyang sites in China.
