Nashwa Al Ruwaini Talks About the “Storm” On Social Media Platforms at the First Arabian Forum for Meteorology and Climate

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, May 18th 2016 [ME NewsWire]

Addressing a packed audience at the first ever Arabian forum for meteorology and climate held in Abu Dhabi, Nashwa Al Ruwaini spoke about the important role of social media in the dissemination of reliable information. Emphasizing the global and local impact of social, she said “Social media platforms are powerful global communication tools. These platforms are very diverse, they educate people, communicate news, ideas and knowledge while keeping us up to date”.

Al Ruwaini continued her speech citing examples from the leaders of the UAE and powerful users in the Emirati community who are exemplary role models such as H. H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, H. H. Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and H. H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Dr. Al Ruwaini also mentioned H. H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s new phase in the evolution of social media by launching the Arab Social Media Influencers Summit, which focuses on the positive use of social media by tapping into the capabilities of the youth in the development of Arab society. During her speech she also cautioned people about sharing misleading information based on rumours and the misuse of social media, which could lead to violations of the UAE’s Federal Cybercrime Law.

She explained the widespread social and economic impact that false information could have citing the example of the communication that went viral during the weather storm that hit Abu Dhabi last March. “While there were a lot of false information circulating the different social media platforms, on the other hand many official websites published and shared the real storm pictures and forecast” she said. “This causes confusion for the general public that may be stuck on the road or may be in need for genuine assistance or directions on the road”.

She urged people to use official sources of information for accurate facts and to avoid being misguided by rumours especially during crises and then proceeded to praise the bravery and dedication of the local police units in undoing the damage wrecked by the storm and concluded her address by stressing that the National Center of Meteorology & Seismology is the only reliable source of information in such matters.
