A practice that can help save the lives of others

The Emergency and Public Safety Department at Abu Dhabi Police has called on both employees and students of the Emirates Driving Company to learn basic first aid techniques and tips and how to apply them using the necessary equipment; so as to avoid any complications that may be associated with medical emergency conditions and to save the life of others.
Captain Yusuf Al Ka’bi, Head of the Community Ambulance Team at the Emergency and Public Safety Department at Abu Dhabi Police, said, “The department has provided awareness-raising programs to educate employees and students about the basic first aid techniques and tips; the risks of household and traffic accidents; cases of choking; fires, slipping or drowning. The programs also teach individuals the proper ways to handle injuries that result from accidents; heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and other medical conditions in order to reduce complications”.
He also noted that within the “Be a Paramedic” campaign and through training workshops, the ambulance teams briefed employees and students on how to request the ambulance service when necessary; follow the proper procedures by providing an accurate description of the accident location while contacting the operations room in order to facilitate the ambulance’s arrival in the shortest possible time, and cooperate by avoiding crowding at accident sites that may hinder the ambulance vehicles’ arrival.
It is worth mentioning that the “Be a Paramedic” campaign, which was launched by the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, aims at providing basic first aid training to at least 70% of employees at ministries and government institutions and departments across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi over a 3 year period.
Captain Al Kaabi also noted that participants in the workshop were introduced to the community ambulance services, which aim to reduce emergency response time and keep patients in a stable condition until paramedics arrive; minimize false reports to improve response time; and promote ambulance services. Participants were also trained on to use the defibrillator (CPR) device.
Furthermore, Captain Al Ka’bi said: “The community ambulance is a service provided by the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ to enhance public awareness about the proper ways to deal with emergency cases; stress the importance of contacting the operations room on 999; identify the needs of external entities for training courses, as well as solve issues that may face medical teams.”
The awareness programs also acquainted participants with the optimal ways to check a patient’s condition, secure respiratory tracks, manage fractures and bleeding, handle instances of choking, and how to avoid any complications by immobilizing the patient’s spine. Workers were also educated on how to call for an ambulance and provide an accurate location of the accident. They were introduced to ways of assessing the condition of the injured individuals, keeping them conscious, and how to handle fractures, burns and choking accidents.
