"To My Neighbo"... A National Initiative to Revive Communication between Neighbors

The MoI Lauded and Urged to Support it

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, June 24th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

An ambitious group of Emirati citizens launched a unique initiative under the slogan “To My Neighbor.” This initiative aims to revive the tradition of communication between neighbors, which was once a popular tradition. As it seems that neighborly communication is nearing extinction due to the evolution of modern life and social media, this initiative involves hand delivering a card that bears congratulatory messages along with homemade food or other commemorative gifts. After reviewing the details and various programs and activities of the initiative, Major General Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, hailed this national and social initiative as a valuable and purposeful ingenuity. Furthermore, the Ministry of Interior urged various sectors and civil society institutions to cooperate with the objectives of this initiative, which aims to enhance and support the living tradition of communication between neighbors. This promotion of neighborly coherence and harmony will strengthen and unify communal and societal bonds.

Mrs. Aisha Saeed Hareb said that the idea for the initiative stemmed from local customs and religion, which recommends treating our neighbors fairly. Mrs. Hareb also added: “It is a reaction to the physical gap between people that has been created by modern social media. Intimacy and wholehearted relationships between people living in same residential neighborhoods used to exist years ago, but it has been lost.”

The initiative includes greeting cards for the holy month of Ramadan and for Eid al-Fitr, which will be printed and made available to the public free of charge. Hoping to promote this approach and revive a beautiful tradition, the cards will be delivered by hand to residents to inspire them to have more personal communication during various national, religious and humanitarian events.

Highlighting the pros of the various modern and technical developments in communication, Mrs. Hessa Sultan Al Saboosi indicated that regardless of these benefits, personal communication and relationships should still be maintained. “Without a proper balance between these types of communication, one type will prevail over the other,” she said. Citing the benefits and goals of “To My Neighbor”, Mrs. Al Saboosi highlighted how this initiative could strengthen social ties, confidence, and collaboration among neighborhood residents and nationals. She concluded by saying: “This would contribute to strengthening the role of ‘the neighborhood’ by promoting an atmosphere of compassion, affection and familiarity among residents. It will also protect children from negative behaviors and phenomena that are alien to our society and preserve social cohesion and cultural identity.”
