ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Monday, July 8th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

The Abu Dhabi Police GHQ will distribute 30,000 Iftar meals to internal and external road users in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region starting from the first day of Ramadan. Iftar meals will also be distributed to individuals arriving and departing through border crossings in Al Ain and Al Ghuwaifat in coordination with the Ports Security Department, before the Maghrib prayers. This step is undertaken in collaboration with the "Abdul Jalil Al Fahim’s Waqf" and Al Foah Co., a dates company in Al Saad.

Major General Mohammed bin Al Awadhi Al Menhali, Director General of Police Operations at Abu Dhabi Police said: “This initiative is undertaken by the Community Police, as well as the various patrols affiliated with police stations in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region; it is in line with the directives of Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, to strengthen partnerships with all sectors of society, including government and community members, in order to promote tolerance and a merciful spirit.

He stressed that this humanitarian initiative revives the values of solidarity embodied by the Holy Month of Ramadan, characterized with its atmosphere of communication, sublime meanings and noble values.

Major General Al Menhali urged motorists to drive carefully during Ramadan, especially before Iftar. He called upon them to avoid haste that could lead to violations and accidents, which can cause injuries and deaths among motorists and pedestrians.

Lt. Colonel Mubarak Bin Muhairom, Head of Department of Community Police stated: “The Abu Dhabi Police GHQ has been consistently implementing the Iftar meals distribution initiative, in collaboration with the ‘Abdul Jalil Al Fahim’s Waqf,’ throughout the month of Ramadan each year, as an expression of social cohesion, which is a feature of UAE society.

He added: “In collaboration with police patrols, the Community Police Department will send out foot patrols to distribute Iftar meals to drivers. Iftar meals will also be distributed at petrol stations and traffic intersections.”

Furthermore, the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police announced that it will intensify control throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan and urged motorists to benefit from the spiritual meanings of the Holy Month to achieve traffic safety by complying with traffic laws, reducing speed, using seatbelts, avoid using mobile phones while driving, maintaining a safe distance between vehicles and paying attention to any surprises on the roads.

Lt. Colonel Jamal Salem Al Amri, Chief of Public Relations Section in the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, urged motorists to respect the rights of other motorists and refrain from blocking exits and parking entrances, or impeding the movement of vehicles by parking close behind them. He stressed the need for drivers to follow the instructions given to them by traffic police personnel, especially near shopping malls and commercial areas that witness traffic congestion.

He highlighted the risks of speeding before Iftar, noting that traffic patrols from the directorate will be patrolling the road just before the Maghrib call to prayer in order to undertake a humanitarian role by handing out Iftar meals to motorists at traffic intersections. He reiterated that this initiative is carried out in cooperation with the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation.

In the same context, Captain Ahmed Ghareeb Al Mansouri, Deputy Chief of Public Relations Section, said: “The Abu Dhabi Police GHQ has been implementing the Iftar meals distribution initiative consistently, in collaboration with the ‘Abdul Jalil Al Fahim’s Waqf’ for six consecutive years now and is committed to distributing meals on time, allowing road users to drive safely and avoid speed and recklessness. This allows them to focus while driving to their destinations.”
