ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, December 4th 2013
Teams from the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense extinguished a huge fire that broke out on Tuesday evening in a textile storage unit in one of the most prominent shopping centers in Abu Dhabi. Firefighters managed to contain the flames and prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent warehouses; no injuries or casualties were reported.
Captain Abdullah Al Tamimi, Head of Public Relations and Customer Service Section at the Directorate General of Civil Defense in Abu Dhabi indicated that both AL Falah center for rapid intervention and Al Madina center were immediately dispatched to location to handle the situation: “Responding teams cooled the area due to the nature of the burned materials. Investigations are still underway to determine the circumstances of the fire,” he added.
He also urged store owners to take preventive and necessary safety measures set by the competent authorities for storing clothes and plastic materials. He also stressed the need to install smoke detectors; portable fire extinguishers shall be provided, maintained, inspected and well distributed. He also warned against putting any obstacles on windows.
Moreover, he pointed out to the importance of providing good ventilation for warehouses, particularly those containing flammable materials and chemicals affected by rising temperatures.
