ADP: Awareness Initiative on the Risks of Fireworks
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, July 31st 2013 [ME NewsWire]
The Abu Dhabi Police GHQ launched an awareness-raising initiative to warn community members against the risks of fireworks. The initiative is part of the “Your Safety” campaign, which will continue during the month of Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr holidays.
Colonel Humaid Saeed Al Afreet, Head of Firearms and Explosives Department at ADP Directorate General of Security and Ports Affairs at Abu Dhabi Police, emphasized that launching the initiative in the last ten days of Ramadan aims to address the increased use of fireworks among people, which represents a negative and dangerous phenomenon at the same time. Moreover, he highlighted the various activities, awareness-raising programs and press material provided in the framework of the initiative implemented by the Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of His Highness Deputy prime Minister and Minister of Interior’s Office. “The main goal of this initiative is to promote awareness among community members, and acquaint them with the dangers associated with fireworks, especially among children and teenagers,” he said.
Colonel Al Afreet urged community members to avoid negative behaviors and practices that may cause physical damages, environmental pollution and fires, thus threatening the safety of community members and their property; causing harm; and spreading fear and chaos in the streets and neighborhoods.
He stressed the need for parents to educate their children on the risks of using firecrackers, especially during the Eid holidays and festivities, generally associated with reckless violations by teenagers who put their lives and the lives of others at risk. Al Afreet called on the public to report any negative practices regarding fireworks by calling the emergency number (999).
Colonel Al Afreet shed light on the risks caused by the reckless and random use of fireworks, leading to serious injuries and permanent disabilities, or even deaths, especially among children and teenagers.
He warned against the fires that break out due to the negative and reckless use of fireworks; thus resulting in serious injuries and suffocation; as well as wasting the time of police officers, ambulance, rescue and firefighting services, in cases that can easily be avoided through awareness. “The loud noise of firecrackers may cause fear and have dangerous psychological impact on children,” he continued.
On the same note, Colonel Al Afreet stressed keenness of the Firearms and Explosives Department ADP Directorate General of Security and Ports Affairs to hold yearlong awareness-raising lectures on the dangers of fireworks in schools at all educational stages. “A number of students took part in the lectures to provide their fellow students with advice and guidance,” he noted; praising the crucial efforts of the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) to ensure the success of such awareness programs.
Concluding, Al Afreet commended the significant and positive impact of past and present awareness campaigns, which acquainted the vast majority of people with the dangers and damages associated with fireworks; thanks to which, some individuals did not hesitate to report the stores that sell these items.
