Dates for Dubai Shopping Festival 2013 Announced

 The 18th edition of the internationally acclaimed Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) will run from 3 January to 3 February 2013 it was announced today by Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment (DEPE), the Dubai Government entity that organizes the famous event.

DEPE launched a marketing campaign revolving around the theme of ‘Dubai at its Best’, which builds on the fact that during the 32 days of DSF the city of Dubai presents the best of every thing it has to offer, painting the city in a festive mood with a unique blend of shopping, prizes, promotions and entertainment. It’s a winning combination that has helped to put Dubai firmly on the map as one of the world’s leading retail destinations.

Dubainow boasts the largest collection of international retail brands in any world city with the exception of London and DSF has become one of the world’s best-loved shopping events with a unique and diverse range of retail experiences - from city and street markets, to traditional souks, to world-class shopping malls.

As well as tax-free discounted shopping, visitors to Dubai during DSF can look forward to hundreds of events and activities - from international concerts, musicals and shows to sporting, outdoor, and fashion events as well as the ever-popular fireworks over picturesque Dubai Creek.

New Qatar University centre inspires volunteers

Qatar, Doha - Monday, October 1st 2012 [ME NewsWire]

A new centre launched today (Sunday) at Qatar University will play a key role in inspiring  students, staff and faculty to volunteer and share their skills in their community.

The Centre for Volunteerism and Civic Responsibility brings together and co-ordinates for the first time different volunteer programs run by colleges and departments across the university, while also expanding the programs and services on offer.

It will act as a one-stop-shop for all those interesting in volunteering to find out more about what is on offer, match their skills and expertise with the opportunities available and to learn from the experiences of others who have been involved in similar programs. It is also open to high-school students across Qatar who are interested in getting involved in volunteering.

The centre, part of university’s Student Affairs Office and housed in the Women’s Activity Building on QU campus, will actively recruit and manage the volunteers and leaders and will have an emphasis on the mutual benefits of community involvement – sharing skills while also helping students have greater empathy and care for others and building their leadership skills. Through their placements, it is hoped that all those taking part will become more responsible citizens and more engaged in an increasingly complex, multicultural society.

In addition, participation in the schemes helps develop critical thinking, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills, as well as enhancing their flexibility, self-awareness and appreciation of diversity. Research has shown that such participation can help contribute to an individual’s overall academic success.

Offering a wide range of volunteering opportunities both inside the campus and in the wider community it will also coordinate a youth-oriented time bank, enabling the sharing of skills.

Marking the opening, participants were given the chance to create an art installation, with different coloured paints representing the interconnected benefits of volunteerism.

President Prof Sheikha Al-Misnad said: “This centre brings together individual, spontaneous behaviour in an organized and institutional way.  QU students are renowned for being active volunteers. This co-ordinated programme will ingrain the spirit of volunteering in their personalities. Communicating and sharing with others is a very important characteristic for a healthy and dynamic society.”

Aljazzi Fetais, Director of Student Activities at QU, said: “For the first time, this center will bring together all our volunteering programs and will provide a structured, directed way of providing voluntary services which best match students’ and staff skills and interests to the needs of a particular organisation or event.

“We hope that more and more people will see the benefits that volunteering can have, not only in their sense of contributing to society but also to improving their own life skills.”

QU drives Qatar’s knowledge economy

Qatar University has launched a host of new graduate courses, as part of its vision to drive forwards the Gulf state to become a knowledge-based economy.

The Masters and PhD programmes which have begun this month, the start of the new academic year, reinforce the commitment of Qatar’s only national university to expanding its portfolio of courses at all levels.

The new programmes particularly reflect Qatar’s ambition of becoming pre-eminent in fields including engineering, environmental science, healthcare and pharmacy while also preserving Arabic language, culture and identity.

An MSc in Biomedical Sciences, which has its initial intake of students this month, is the first of its kind in Qatar and the wider Gulf region. The course was benchmarked against similar programs in the US and has been tailored to meet the demand for highly-trained professionals to work in Qatar’s increasingly-advanced healthcare system.

The four semester-long program will groom graduates to find jobs in clinical and research laboratories and in the field of clinical chemistry, hematology, immune-hematology and blood banking, microbiology, cytogenetics, molecular diagnostics, and lab management.

Dr Eiman Mustafawi, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said:  “This program will produce a cadre of specialists who will contribute to best practices in health and healthcare processes in Qatar.  We are pleased to offer this first-ever program that will advance clinical practices and lab management approaches.”

 Other new courses soon to be on offer at the College include a PhD in Environmental Sciences and an MSc in Materials Science.  These programs are expected to have their first intake of students in September 2013.

They follow the recent introduction of doctorates in Pharmacy and Engineering, both of which began last September. The PhD Engineering program capitalises on Qatar’s focus as a driving force in world-class engineering projects. Students are expected to foster innovative ideas, methods and techniques in sciences and engineering. They also have the opportunity to take part in a program of research and doctoral training, in a joint initiative with University College London.

QU’s College of Pharmacy recently introduced a DPharm program to complement its internationally-recognized undergraduate courses. Available full-time and also part-time for select resident Qatar pharmacists, the doctorate is designed to meet international standards for an advanced degree in health sciences and to further advance the practice of pharmacy in Qatar.

Three new Masters programs at QU have been introduced in the environment of preserving and enhancing Arabic language and culture. The MA in Arabic Language offers three tracks – language, literature and criticism, and cultural studies and comparison. Meanwhile, the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies has launched two new Masters this academic year - Quranic Sciences and Tasfeer, and Fiqh and Usul Al Fiqh. The first of their kind in Qatar, these programs are designed to produce a cadre of specialists in Quranic research, analysis and interpretation of religious texts, Islamic jurisprudence and its origins, sources and principles.

جامعة قطر تُطلق مركز التطوع والمسؤولية المدنية

في إطار التزامها نحو المجتمع القطري وتطبيقاً لمفهوم الخدمة الاجتماعية

في إطار التزامها بخدمةالمجتمع التي هي جزء منه، أطلقت جامعة قطر مؤخراً مركز التطوع والمسؤولية المدنيّة في بادرة فريدة تهدف إلى تبنّي أفكار منتسبي الجامعة، طلبة وموظفين وأعضاء هيئة تدريس، ومشاريعهم التطوعية والعمل على تطويرها. كما سيكون للمركز دور فعّال في نشر الوعي بأهمية العمل التطوعي ودوره في تحقيق التنمية المجتمعيّة والتكاتف الاجتماعي. و تهدف رسالة المركز إلى السعي نحو تطوير معرفة وقدرات ومهارات منتسبي الجامعة ليكونوا أعضاء فاعلين وموظفين مسؤولين في مجتمع متنوع الثقافات.

ولأول مرة، يجمع هذا المركز تحت راية واحدة العديد من برامج التطوع التي تُديرها كليات الجامعة وأقسامها ويعمل على تطوير أنشطتها وتوسيع دائرة الخدمات التي تقدمها.

وسيعمل المركز على استقطاب الطلبة المهتمين بالعمل التطوعي للتعرف أكثر على الفرص المُتاحة بما يتوافق مع خبراتهم واهتماماتهم ومهاراتهم العملية. وسيكتسب المتطوعون خبرة عملية فريدة من المشاركين في برامج تطوعية مماثلة. ولعل أهم ما يميز هذا البرنامج هو استقطابه لطلبة المدارس الثانوية لحثهم على الانخراط بالعمل التطوعي في المجتمع.

كما سيعمل مركز التطوع التابع لإدارة الأنشطة في قطاع شؤون الطلبة على تجنيد المتطوعين وقادة الفرق التطوعية وتنظيم عملهم بما يحقق منفعة تبادلية لهم وللمجتمع. وسيلعب ذلك دوراً فعالاً في تشكيل شخصية الأفراد وبناء قدراتهم ومهاراتهم القيادية. ومن المؤمّل بأن يُسهم هذا المركز في خلق مواطنين مسؤولين وأكثر اندماجا في مجتمعهم ذي الحضارات والثقافات المختلفة.    

وقد عَمِلَ المركز منذ تأسيسه على تفعيل دورهفي الحرم الجامعي والبيئة المحيطة به، حيث أعدّ وشارك في مجموعة متنوعة من الأعمال التطوعية التي لم تنحصر في جامعة قطر؛ منها التعاون مع جمعية قطر الخيرية بمسابقة الشباب والعمل التطوعي 2 وحملة ليان بالتعاون مع مؤسسة سند.

علاوة على ذلك، سيساعد المركز في تطوير مهارات التفكير النقدي وحل المشكلات لدى المتطوعين، فضلاً عن اكتسابهم مهارات المرونة والوعي الذاتي واحترام التنوع الثقافي والمسؤولية والمواطنة ومهارات التواصل المختلفة. وقد أظهرت دراسة بأن مشاركة الطلبة في العمل التطوعي قد تُساهم بشكل كبير في تحسين أدائهم الأكاديمي.

جامعة قطر تدعم مجتمع الاقتصاد والمعرفة في قطر

إتاحة برامج ماجستير ودكتوراه في مختلف التخصصات

انطلاقاُ من رؤية جامعة قطر الرامية إلى تطوير مجتمع قائم على العلم والمعرفة في قطر ومنطقة الخليج، عَمَدت الجامعة إلى إطلاق برامج دراسات عليا جديدة تتناول مختلف التخصصات تلبيةً لاحتياجات سوق العمل ولدفع عجلة التطور والتنمية في المنطقة.

وتزامناً مع بداية العام الأكاديمي، كشفت الجامعة النّقاب على عدد من برامج الماجستير والدكتوراه وذلك في إطار مساعيها الرامية إلى تعزيز التزامها بالأهداف المنصوص عليها في رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030 باعتبارها الجامعة الوطنية الوحيدة في الدولة.   

وتعكس التخصصات الجديدة طموح قطر في أن تصبح منارة للعلم والمعرفة في مختلف التخصصات كالهندسة وعلوم البيئة والرعاية الصحية والصيدلة مع الأخذ بعين الاعتبار المحافظة على الموروث العربي و اللغة والثقافة والهوية العربية.

كما استقبلت كلية الآداب والعلوم الدفعة الأولى من طلبة ماجستير العلوم الطبية الحيوية وهو الأول من نوعه في قطر ومنطقة الخليج. وصُمّمَ هذا البرنامج قياساً على البرامج المماثلة في الولايات المتحدة الأميركية تلبية لتطلعات المجتمع ولتخريج طلبة متخصصين متدربين ومؤهلين للانخراط في قطاع الرعاية الصحية. 

وسيُتيح البرنامج ذو الأربعة فصول للخريجين فرصة العمل في المختبرات الطبية والبحثيّة في مجال الكيمياء السريرية وأمراض الدم والمناعة وعلم الأحياء المجهرية والوراثة الخلوية وإدارة المختبرات.

وبدورها قالت عميد كلية الآداب والعلوم د. إيمان مصطفوي: "يهدف البرنامج إلى تخريج كوكبة من الطلبة المبدعين الذين سيُسهمون بشكل كبير في تطور القطاع الصحي والرعاية الصحية في قطر. إننا سعداء بطرح هذا البرنامج المعني بتطوير الممارسات الطبية السريرية وتحسين أساليب إدارة المختبرات الطبية".

وتعتزم الكلية أيضاً إطلاق برنامجي دكتوراه العلوم البيئية و ماجستير علوم المواد قريباً، ومن المتوقع أن تستقبل الجامعة الدفعة الأولى من الطلبة في سبتمبر 2013.  

ويأتي هذا التطوّر في البرامج الأكاديمية في كلية الآداب والعلوم بعد إطلاق برنامجي دكتوراه الصيدلة والهندسة خلال سبتمبر الماضي. ويأتي برنامج دكتوراه الهندسة داعماً للدولة باعتبارها محوراً فعالاً في الكثير من المشاريع الهندسية العالمية. ومن المتوقع أن يخلق الطلبة أفكاراً إبداعية وطرق منهجية في العلوم والهندسة. وسيحظى الطلبة بفرصة المشاركة في برنامج بحثي تدريبي متميّز وذلك في إطار بادرة تعاونيّة مع جامعة لندن.

من ناحية أخرى، أطلقت كلية الصيدلة في جامعة قطر مؤخراً برنامج دكتوراه صيدلة الأول من نوعه في قطر. وقد أُتيح البرنامج بدوامين جزئي و كامل وتم تصميمه لإعداد الطلبة المتميزين من خريجي برنامج بكالوريوس الصيدلة لشغل وظائف مرموقة في مجال الصيدلة السريرية المتقدمة وما يتصل بها من جوانب بحثية وأكاديمية وذلك وفقاً لأفضل المعايير العالمية لتطوير مهنة الصيدلة في قطر.

كما طرحت جامعة قطر ثلاثة برامج ماجستير في الحفاظ على البيئة و تعزيز الثقافة واللغة العربية ، وتتيح كلية الآداب والعلوم ماجستير اللغة العربية في ثلاثة مسارات مختلفة: اللغة، الأدب والنقد الأدبي، الدراسات والمقارنة الثقافية. وفي هذا العام، تطرح كلية الشريعة والدراسات الإسلامية برنامجي ماجستير، الأول في العلوم القرآنية والتفسير و الآخر في الفقه وأصول الفقه وهي البرامج الأولى من نوعها في قطر. وقد تم تصميم هذه البرامج لتخريج كادر طلابي من المتخصصين  في مجال البحوث القرآنية وتحليلها والنصوص الدينية وتفسيرها و الفقه الإسلامي و أصوله و مصادره ومبادئه.
