The Knowledge Centre at Strategy and Performance Development General Directorate, at Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, organized the 6th knowledge forum about “The Ebola Virus: Risks and Prevention” The forum was held at the Forensics Evidence hall, at Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters (GHQ), in collaboration with the Knowledge Higher Committee.
The forum discussed the various methods to deal with the virus and the role played by the security institutions in this regard. The forum was attended by Major General Khalil Dawood Badran, Director General of Finance and Services; Brigadier Salem Al Shamesi, Deputy Director General of Finance and Services; Colonel Mohammed Hamid bin Dalmouj Al Dhaheri, Strategy and Performance Development Director General and a number of senior officers.
In his speech at the forum, Major General Khalil Dawood Badran stressed, the keenness of Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters to enhance the cooperation with local institutions and departments to exchange knowledge and promote partnerships with a view to achieve the visions and aspirations of the Abu Dhabi Government. He also reiterated the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ’s commitment to enhance awareness regarding prevention measures and to guarantee the health and safety of staff members, customers, partners, and community members in general.
In the paper he presented at the forum, Colonel Ali Saeed Al Nuaimi, Director of the National Coordination and Response Office in Abu Dhabi, at the National Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA), explained the overall role of the authority, and the specific tasks undertaken by the coordination office in dealing with crises and disasters. He noted that handling epidemic requires cooperation and mutual planning between all concerned authorities. “The coordination office is in charge of synchronizing efforts and ensuring complementarity of the concerned authorities’ actions, within a comprehensive preparedness plan in case of such crises,” he continued.
Adding further, Colonel Al Nuaimi defined the crisis, as a crucial or sudden situation, a turning point or unstable conditions involving an impending change or undesirable consequences in a short period of time. Such incidents require great crisis management skills and decisive decision making approaches to handle them. Crisis involve fast paced, dynamic, complex and linked incidents, which require proper preparation.
Colonel Al Nuaimi explained that planning is one of the essentials of crisis management in successful organizations, as it helps to prevent crisis, contain the damage and eliminate the element of surprise. Planning provides the crisis management team with the ability to make an organized and efficient response with high efficiency and allows for proper preparation for unexpected emergency situations that may accompany the crisis.
In the second paper, Dr. Omniyat Al Hajiri, Director of Public Health and Research Division at the Health Authority - Abu Dhabi (HAAD), highlighted the risks associated with the dangerous Ebola virus, its symptoms, and ways to prevent infection and transmission. She explained that the first stage of the infection is often characterized by the sudden onset of fever; intense weakness; headache and muscle pain. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding. The virus is transmitted by direct contact with blood, body fluids or secretions of infected people or animals. She stressed the importance of raising awareness and taking all necessary precautions to prevent infection with the virus.
At the conclusion of the forum, Director General of Finance and Services honored the participants. He pointed to the importance of such forums in enriching the knowledge of the Abu Dhabi Police staff, and promoting prevention awareness among community members.
