Abu Dhabi Civil Defense and Ducab Launch Fire Safety Awareness Campaign

“Power over Fire”

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, June 23rd 2013 [ME NewsWire]

The General Directorate of the Civil Defense in Abu Dhabi launched the second cycle of its awareness campaign on fire safety and prevention. The campaign, which was launched in cooperation with Dubai Cable Company (Ducab) under the title “Power over Fire,” will run throughout the end of June.

The campaign stresses the vital role played by proactive institutions in the community, especially the civil defense department and Ducab. It aims to raise awareness on the use of high-risk materials in buildings, mainly electric cables. The campaign, which promotes safety and prevention measures, is in line with promoting prosperity efforts, which the country is witnessing in the construction industry.

With the campaign’s first cycle launched in Dubai last may, the campaign aims to educate members of the public, especially construction workers, contractors, and retailers on the safety measures that should be followed in buildings, houses, and work sites; the campaign urges them to adhere to best practices in construction.

Ducab has custom built a 40-foot truck that will be emblazoned with messages of relevance to the campaign. The truck will be stocked with useful materials to distribute among the public. The truck is fitted out with high-tech learning materials and kiosks with high-definition televisions to demonstrate safety and security practices.

Colonel Jumaa Salem Al Dhamani, Abu Dhabi Civil Defense Deputy Director-General, said: “The UAE civil defense department is committed to supporting the efforts, initiatives, and best practices adopted by government departments and private companies to raise awareness among employees in various manufacturing, trade and service sectors. Comprehensive development should be coupled with the highest levels of safety for employees and best-in-class product quality.”

“The civil defense department supports awareness campaigns, such as ‘Power over Fire.’ The campaign, which is carried out by Ducab, emphasizes on production and the use of high-quality cables that can support different voltages. It sheds light on fire-resistant cables as the main safety and prevention measure against fires,” he added.

Colonel Al Dhamani continued: “This campaign is part of the public safety strategy, pursued by the government and carried out by the Civil Defense General Directorate with its partners in the public and private sectors, to combat commercial fraud. Public safety can only be achieved with the participation of everyone in the UAE. Given that fires caused by the inflammation of power cables of various sizes are among the most frequent causes, the civil defense department supports high-quality electrical products, such as fire-resistant cables. This type of cable protects lives and properties through international quality standards adhered by Ducab."

Colin McKay, GM Sales & Marketing, Ducab, said, "Through the Fire Safety Awareness Campaign initiative, Ducab seeks to embody the best forms of effective community cooperation and partnership, particularly in its venture with the Directorate General of Civil Defense. Through this campaign, we aim to educate and encourage those responsible for construction, contracting and retail to follow the best construction and safety practices.”

McKay added: “Using sub-standard electrical cables that do not meet the required safety standards is one of the main causes of fire in the UAE. According to statistics compiled by the civil defense department, household fires occur most frequently. Most of these fire incidents take place in kitchens where people fail to follow safety procedures.”
