Police Arrest 2 New “Nocturnal Bandit” Members

Gang Members in Long-Term Plan to Steal from Companies

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, June 16th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

The Abu Dhabi Police arrested the remaining suspects in the seven-member gang called the “Nocturnal Bandits.” The other five members were arrested at the beginning of last week. The two new members, 26-year-old I.A. and 22-year-old Sh. B., both truck drivers, confessed their involvement in the gang. Theft operations carried out by the gang over the past two months amounted to AED 2 million in stolen items.

Interrogations with the Pakistani gang revealed that its members had a long-term plan to target a long list of companies. They made the list based on information they received while dealing with these companies. According to Colonel Dr. Rashed Mohammed Borshid, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the gang members would sell these companies copper and diesel and later steal these same items after locating where they were stored. They would later sell it again, and steal it in a cycle of deception. They also stole cash from safes.

On June 7th, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Abu Dhabi Police arrested the gang nicknamed the “Nocturnal Bandits.” The masked gang members stole from private facilities in the Al Mafraq and Musaffah industrial areas in Abu Dhabi, using physical force to take the guards and workers by surprise. They would assault these guards and workers, threaten them under knife-point, muzzle and restrain them. The thieves wore masks and gloves, and would escape the scene leaving no trace behind in an effort to get away with their crimes.

Colonel Rashed Borshid called upon the owners of private facilities to lock all doors and windows properly, and urged them to take the necessary precautions to protect their properties. He also advised against leaving cash at the premises suggesting instead that money be kept in the bank. Moreover, he warned them against trusting all employees and discouraged security personnel from informing employees of the facility’s security measures or discussing the facility’s available valuables. Colonel Borshid underscored the need for large companies and facilities to hire specialized security companies, as well as train their own security personnel on the best means to handle emergencies. He also urged them not to rely on workers for guarding responsibilities.
