Dubai Design District (d3) Supports Update Launch of New Photo-Sharing App Yebab

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Monday, June 30th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

Since launching the project almost a year ago, Dubai Design District (d3) has been a key supporter of a number of industry initiatives and events, in a bid to demonstrate its strategic commitment to the design, fashion, art and luxury sectors in the UAE. A creative hub dedicated to promoting and nurturing emerging local and regional talents, d3 takes its role in helping to shape the design industry very seriously and its support of the update launch of Yebab only served to reinforce this positioning further.

Hosted at the Impact Hub, bloggers, tech influencers and key media were introduced to the new Yebab concept. Founded in 2008 by Murshed and Mareyah Mohamed, Yebab has become in recent years one of the most influential online wedding directories in the region. With the ever growing reach of social media in the GCC, it was just a natural progression to develop a new photo-sharing concept with a twist and Yebab App was born.

Launched this April, with the mission to improve the way people connect and communicate, the user-friendly service has been designed to offer a dedicated, global platform where friends and followers could share photos and file them into sub-categories such as Fashion, Food, Entertainment, Travels …, to boost engagement with other users.

Catherine Thomas, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications for Dubai Design District, commented: Dubai has always harvested a strong entrepreneurial spirit, and I believe its ambition and determination will continue to be a source of inspiration for the global community.

Our core objective is to nurture this crop of talented and creative talents we have in the region: emerging brands, freelancers and start-ups such as Yebab and help them achieve their full potential. We are looking forward to further strengthen our collaboration with driven, passionate and gifted home-grown entrepreneurs and fully contribute to enhancing our creative design community”.

MoI Ramadan Councils to kick off on Tuesday

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, June 29th 2014 [ME NewsWire]
The Ministry of Interior, represented by the Law Respect Culture Bureau at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Interior, will be launching the legal Ramadan Councils as of Tuesday, on the UAE level. These Councils complement the initiative that started in 2012 to host such councils, as an effort from the MoI to involve the UAE citizens and provide them with the opportunity to discuss the important topics of interest to the public.

Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Salah Obeid Al Ghoul, Director of Law Respect Culture Bureau, the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior said that the Ramadan Councils are  an opportunity for governmental institutions to meet with citizens in purposeful national dialogue sessions, aimed at achieving excellence in the services they provide. The councils take place in a friendly atmosphere conducive to dialogue which allows UAE citizens to submit their proposals for the benefit of the country and their fellow citizens. They also aim to enhance the services provided to them in light of the progress and development that the UAE is witnessing on all levels.

Lieutenant Colonel Al Ghoul said: “Based on the police leadership’s directives, the UAE Vision 2021 has been chosen as the theme for this year’s Ramadan Councils under the slogan ‘2021… A Leadership Vision and Society Interaction’” He also stressed that the UAE Vision 2021 represents an integrated approach for the future envisioned by the UAE leadership to outline the Emirati character, including individuals, institutions, or the country. Lieutenant Colonel Al Ghoul said that choosing the UAE Vision 2021 as a theme for dialogue is an indication of the leadership’s approach on all levels, which believes in the importance of involving community members as essential partners to help the leadership perform its most vital duties, starting from the upbringing of children within the family down to protecting the nation and achieving its safety and security.

Dr. Al Ghoul said that a total of 35 councils will be held during the Holy Month of Ramadan, out of which four will be assigned to discuss the UAE Vision’s four elements (United in Responsibility; United in Destiny; United in Knowledge; United in Prosperity), within each emirate. A women’s council will also be organized in each emirate in order to discuss different topics under the UAE Vision.

The United in Responsibility theme includes 7 topics: ‘confident and socially-responsible Emiratis’; ‘our responsibilities towards our country’; ‘role of family in nurturing exceptional leaders’; ‘social security net’; ‘Khalifa: Completing the journey’; ‘domestic workers: necessity and dangers’; in addition to ‘youth and stimulants’. These topics will be discussed during the Ramadan Councils, with a view to instill ambition and a sense of responsibility in the spirit of Emiratis and urge them to build their future with confidence, and efficiently take part in an increasingly developing social and economic environment. Such discussions also aim to produce a cohesive society that is based on family, social cohesion, moderate Islamic values and authentic national heritage.

The second theme, United in Destiny also includes seven topics, namely; ‘Zayed; the dream’; ‘Mohammed bin Rashid: triumph, victory and love’; ‘the UAE: model of rights’; ‘our motto: the home is united’; ‘our overseas image’; ‘patriotism: a collective responsibility’; and the ‘national service is an honor’. These topics are intended to engage people to discuss the common destiny that binds all those who live under the stewardship and protection of a resilient and integrated Federation, which protects Emiratis and ensures balanced development throughout its territory, so as to allow the UAE to continue to grow as a strong and influential nation.

The Ramadan Councils will also tackle seven different topics that include the ‘Sustainable Energy Culture’; ‘Smart Government: a luxury or necessity’; ‘development of Emirati skills’; ‘social media: impact and vulnerability’; ‘knowledge transfer and management’. These topics fall under the third theme United in knowledge, which includes the basic requirements needed to establish a diversified and flexible knowledge-based economy, powered by skilled Emiratis and strengthened by world-class talent to ensure long-term prosperity for the UAE.

The fourth theme, United in prosperity, promotes the image of the UAE people as individuals that enjoy the highest living standards, long and healthy lives, first-rate education and well-rounded lifestyles guaranteed by excellent public services and recreational social and cultural activities, within a safe and rich natural environment. Under this theme, numerous topics will be discussed, related to the ‘modern infrastructure’; ‘prosperity through creativity’; ‘the UAE, a beacon of culture’; ‘drugs, a scourge that ruins lives’; ‘health consequences of social behavior’; ‘tolerance, a national culture’; and ‘our environmental behavior’.

The women’s councils will be tackling the four fundamental themes of the UAE Vision 2021, and will include seven topics, namely; ‘women and leadership support’; ‘education from indoctrination down to creative thinking’; ‘the UAE between modernity and heritage’; ‘education between knowledge and experience’; ‘martyrs of duty will not be forgotten’; ‘financial education for UAE families’; and ‘the UAE culture and domestic workers’.

U.S. FDA Grants Breakthrough Therapy Designation to Pradaxa® (dabigatran etexilate) Specific Investigational Antidote

INGELHEIM, Germany. - Monday, June 30th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

  • Idarucizumab rapidly reverses anticoagulation induced with Pradaxa® and may broaden existing range of reversal options available to physicians in emergency situations1,2
  • Previous results from study in healthy volunteers show antidote to be well-tolerated with immediate, complete and sustained effect1
(BUSINESS WIRE) For media outside of the U.S., the UK & Canada only
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation to the investigational antidote idarucizumab* (a humanized antibody fragment), currently being studied as a specific antidote for the oral anticoagulant Pradaxa® (dabigatran etexilate).3
“In light of Boehringer Ingelheim’s core mission to provide value through innovation, we are pleased that the FDA has granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation to idarucizumab to help expedite its development,” said Professor Klaus Dugi, Chief Medical Officer, Boehringer Ingelheim. “It’s important to note that the positive efficacy and safety profile for Pradaxa® is well-documented in both clinical trials and real-world evaluations, which were all conducted in the absence of an antidote. The specific investigational antidote for Pradaxa®, which our scientists at Boehringer Ingelheim are developing, would give physicians an additional and highly targeted option beyond the already existing measures for treatment in case of certain emergency situations.”
The FDA established the Breakthrough Therapy Designation as a means to accelerate the development and review of drugs for serious or life-threatening conditions if preliminary clinical evidence indicates the therapy may demonstrate a substantial improvement over existing therapies on one or more clinically significant endpoints.4
Prior clinical research of the antidote in a healthy volunteer study with 145 participants has already demonstrated the potential of the antidote for immediate, complete and sustained reversal of the anticoagulant effect of dabigatran.1 In the placebo-controlled study, the antidote was well tolerated and did not cause any clinically relevant side effects.1 These aspects are especially valuable in clinical situations where rapid reversal of dabigatran-induced anticoagulation may be beneficial for patients taking Pradaxa®.
REVERSE-AD, a global patient study, is now underway to investigate the potential antidote in the clinical setting in patients taking Pradaxa® who have uncontrolled bleeding or require emergency procedures.3 The study will be open to eligible patients in more than 35 countries and at over 500 sites.3 This is the first time that an antidote under development for a novel oral anticoagulant is investigated in a study in patients.3
The antidote is still under investigation and has not yet been approved for clinical use.
* Idarucizumab is the recommended International Nonproprietary Name (INN).

2000 Fines Reported in 5 Months for Illegal Passenger Transport in Abu Dhabi

Colonel Tariq Al GhoulADP and TransAD Join Hands to Combat this Practice

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, June 29th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

The Abu Dhabi Police announced that 2000 fines for illegal passenger transport (carpooling) in private cars in five months, and all violators were Asian. To this end, Abu Dhabi Police, in cooperation with the Centre for Regulation of Transport by Hire Cars (TransAD), have joined hands to put a stop to this illegal practice and fine violators in a joint crackdown campaign.

According to law, illegal car lift services or illegal passengers transport is using private vehicles to transport passengers for a fee without a license.

Colonel Tariq Al Ghoul, Head of Department of Transport at the Abu Dhabi Police, said, “This campaign aims to strictly curb this practice by raising awareness among motorists on the need to refrain from using their private vehicles to transport passengers for money. The illegal car lift practice requires a radical solution in order to protect safety and security. We urge individuals to avoid using this illegal service and help the police and all other concerned authorities in fighting it.”

Colonel Al Ghoul added, “This campaign came as a response to complaints we received from individuals who used this illegal service. In a meeting, the transportation police and TransAD discussed illegal car lift, its risks, and the nationalities that are mainly involved in this illegal service.”

Continuing, Colonel Al Ghoul said, “This campaign is advertised in newspapers, radio and television, and in all languages. It explains the risks of illegal car lift and its resulting fines to the audience. This campaign utilizes joint efforts of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, the Traffic Control, and TransAD to nab violators.”

For his part, Mohammed Darwish Al Qumzi, Director of TransAD, said, “We need to intensify our inspections during peak times in the areas of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, in cooperation with the transport police.”

Hamad Al Dhahiri, Chief of Illegal Passenger Transport Section, TransAD, said, “According to statistics and studies, certain nationalities provide this illegal service across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. TransAD has provided a big number of taxis in areas where illegal car lift thrives. This aims to facilitate taxi services, provide a legal alternative to public transportation and urge people to use it.”

The joint committee assigned to address illegal car lift recommended steps to find solutions to the challenges that inspectors face during the crackdown. The committee also recommended presence in major locations for passenger movement, and to contribute in regulating passenger movement in touristic areas.
